i was told there would be cake

Sloane Crosley, 29, has shilled for Joan Didion, Jonathan Lethem and—hairball!—Dave Eggers. Now she’s got her own book—and shiny hair that will make you weep! you can read more about her there. i think she is very funny, witty and generally awesome, i guess i am jumping on the bandwagon…oh well.

tatebanko near and far

hiroshige
hokusai
i stumbled across these dioramas (made by ‘It’s a Beautiful Day’), perfect for holiday gift giving, which though i feel is a little obscene to be posting now, it seems the push is on. so note it down, put it on your list and think it over. as someone who has spent a great deal of time in involved paper arts i am particularly enamored with these things. here is a little back story:

Tatebanko is a forgotten Japanese art of creating amazing dioramas and scenic perspectives from paper. Tatebanko was popular and widely admired from the Edo period (17th century) to the early 20th century. Then it all but disappeared. Tatebanko.com has now revived and preserved this beautiful and simple Japanese art whilst reinterpreting it for our times.

Now unless you can read japanese (and i don’t know THAT many people out of country that can) you might think about swinging on over to Brooklyn 5 and 10 to pick ‘em up stateside.
